We engineer software products, not brochures

Founded in August 2023 in Mardan, Pakistan. A small engineering team that builds operational software — and runs a product of its own.

Most of what we build is operational: the systems a company runs on rather than the site in front of them. Multi-branch retail platforms, SaaS products with real tenancy, internal tools, APIs between systems that were never designed to talk to each other, and the mobile surfaces the people in the field actually use.

We are a software engineering company rather than a design agency that also codes. That shows up in what we argue about: the data model before the screens, permissions at the data layer rather than in the interface, and whether a backup has ever actually been restored. It also shows up in what we decline — we will tell a client to buy an off-the-shelf product when that is the right answer, even though it costs us the work.

Our clearest statement is EncoderPOS. It is our own product, in production, handling point of sale, live inventory, purchasing, multi-branch operations, accounting and analytics — and it keeps billing when the connection drops, because the businesses running it cannot stop selling when the internet does. Operating it means the unglamorous second-year work is something we have done rather than something we anticipate.

    The company starts

    Encoder Technologies is founded in August 2023 in Mardan, Pakistan, doing custom software and web application work for local businesses.

  2. 2024

    EncoderPOS goes into production

    Our own POS and business management platform reaches production and begins running real retail operations — the counter, the warehouse and the ledger as one system.

  3. Now

    Products, platforms and AI

    The team delivers SaaS platforms, business systems, mobile applications and applied machine-learning features for clients locally and remotely, alongside continued development of EncoderPOS.

Our process

How we turn ideas into software.

Seven stages, each with an output you can review. You see working software early rather than a long silence followed by a reveal.

    Discover

    Understand the business, the users and the constraints.

    We map the workflow as it runs today — who does what, where it breaks, and what the failure actually costs. This is where we also decide whether the project should exist in the form it was requested.

  2. 02

    Define

    Fix the scope, the architecture and the roadmap.

    Scope, data model, tenancy and integration boundaries are settled before code. We separate what must be structurally correct on day one from what can safely wait, and we write both down.

  3. 03

    Design

    Design the interfaces people will live in.

    Screens are designed against real data density and real devices, including the empty and error states that decide whether a system is usable on a bad day. The deliverable is a design system, not a set of images.

  4. 04

    Engineer

    Build the frontend, backend and integrations.

    Implementation in the stack the product needs, delivered in reviewable stages. You see working software early and often rather than a long silence followed by a reveal.

  5. 05

    Test

    Prove the paths that cost money if they fail.

    Billing, stock, permissions, sync and the empty states in between. Security review, load behaviour and a genuine restore of the backup — not a checkbox that says backups are enabled.

  6. 06

    Launch

    Deploy a release the team can repeat.

    Production environment, monitoring, backups and a rollout the client's own team can run again next month. Handover includes documentation and the credentials to operate without us.

    Evolve

    Keep improving the product after launch.

    Operational software is never finished. The next module, the next branch, the next integration — plus maintenance, dependency updates and the performance work that keeps it fast as data grows.

Engineering

Engineered for performance. Built to scale.

What a request actually passes through, and the decisions made at each layer. This is the part that determines whether a system is still maintainable in its third year.

  1. Frontend

    Server-rendered React. HTML first, JavaScript only where interaction needs it.

  2. API

    Authenticated, documented REST and webhook surfaces with rate limiting.

  3. Application

    Domain logic, permissions and background jobs — the part that must be correct.

  4. Database

    PostgreSQL or MySQL with constraints, indexes and migrations under review.

  5. Cache

    Redis for sessions, queues and the reads that would otherwise repeat.

  6. Cloud

    Containerised deployment, monitoring, and backups with a restore that has been tested.

  • Security

    Permissions enforced at the data layer, secrets out of the codebase, dependencies updated, and attributable changes on records that matter.

  • Scalability

    Tenancy and data models decided before the first screen, because those are the decisions that are expensive to reverse.

  • Performance

    Indexed queries, cached reads, server-rendered HTML and a measured budget rather than an assumption.

  • APIs

    Documented contracts other teams can build against, versioned so an integration does not break on a Tuesday.

  • Databases

    Constraints in the schema, migrations in review, and a ledger design where history is a record rather than a guess.

  • Cloud

    Reproducible environments on AWS, Azure, DigitalOcean or a VPS — chosen by what the business can operate.

  • CI/CD

    Pipelines the client's own team can run, so releasing is routine rather than an event requiring the original developer.

  • Monitoring

    Uptime and error tracking that reports a failure before a customer does, with alerts someone actually receives.
